Christabel Balfour (b. 1991, London) is an artist based in Suffolk.
She received her BFA from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, graduating in 2013. For the last ten years she has primarily worked in the medium of rug and tapestry weaving.
Her work explores the blurred boundaries between art object and functional craft, and her output has ranged from wall-hanging tapestries, sculptural installations and live weaving projects to handwoven rugs, upholstery and window shutters.
She examines the tangible realities of the weaving process - its tactile, rooted qualities - and its potential for storytelling and myth-making. She draws on imagery from the natural world, textile traditions from around the world and religious traditions from the British Isles.
The time-consuming nature of weaving necessitates brevity. Her artistic practice is always seeking to communicate as much as possible with the simplest of forms - a continual process of stripping things down to their essence.
