This is a one day workshop held at Lois Gunn Studio & Shop, a ceramics studio and gallery in the heart of Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Join me for an in-depth exploration of geometric shapes and pattern in tapestry weaving. I’ll be sharing the techniques and processes that I use in my own work every day to create flawless geometric shapes and complex patterns.

You’ll leave the workshop with your own loom, weaving tools and yarn - everything you need to keep weaving at home!

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced weavers.

  • The workshop will begin by looking at the various techniques for creating geometric shapes and patterns in tapestry. We’ll discuss the challenges of constructing curves on the grid of warp and weft, and creating smooth, flat shapes when hand-weaving. You’ll then be encouraged to either pick one complex technique to explore in depth or several simpler techniques try out on the loom. These can include

    - Weaving neat, precise shapes using cardboard cut-outs

    - Using pick-and-pick and alternating passes to create stripes

    - Combining stripes with solid blocks of colour to create complex patterns

    - Using pick-and-pick or alternating passes to create transitions and overlaps between shapes

We will also work on improving your weaving technique overall. You will learn how to keep the warp evenly spaced, the weft running smoothly through it and the selvedges straight.

Instruction will also be given on how to take your tapestry off the loom at the end of the class, but you are not expected to completely finish your tapestry in the workshop.

There will be plenty of time for one-on-one teaching as well as opportunities for me to answer any weaving questions.

  • The workshop will take place at Lois Gunn Studio & Shop in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

The shop is a short walk up the hill from Woodbridge train station. Parking is available at the station car park.

There are regular trains running from London Liverpool Street, and the journey time to Woodbridge is about an hour and a half.

  • The workshop begins at 10:30 and finishes at 4:30. Access to the workshop room upstairs will begin from 10:15 - please note you will not be able to come upstairs before then.

However, the doors downstairs will open before then, so you are welcome to browse Lois’ studio and shop!

Please make sure you arrive in time for the workshop to begin promptly at 10:30.

We will have a short break for lunch at 1pm. Students are encouraged to bring lunch or to pop out and purchase something from the high street.

Tea & coffee will be provided throughout.

I will be in touch in advance of the class to confirm all details and to check if you have any dietary requirements.
