The workshop will begin by looking at the various techniques for creating abstract forms and combining colours in tapestry. We’ll discuss the challenges of constructing curves on the grid of warp and weft, and different methods of creating shapes that “flow” on the loom. You’ll then be encouraged to either pick one complex technique to explore in depth or several simpler techniques try out on the loom. These can include
- Weaving abstract shapes using cardboard cut-outs, or sketching directly onto the loom
- Working against the grid of warp and weft with free-weaving
- Blending different weft colours together on the loom
- Using colour blending to create transitions and overlaps between shapes
- Weaving with multiple weft sections to create complex abstract designs
We will also work on improving your weaving technique overall. You will learn how to keep the warp evenly spaced, the weft running smoothly through it and the selvedges straight.
Instruction will also be given on how to take your tapestry off the loom at the end of the class, but you are not expected to completely finish your tapestry in the workshop.
There will be plenty of time for one-on-one teaching as well as opportunities for me to answer any weaving questions.
