This is a one day workshop held at Lois Gunn Studio & Shop, a ceramics studio and gallery in the heart of Woodbridge, Suffolk.

Join me for an in-depth exploration of sculpture and texture in tapestry weaving. I’ll be sharing the techniques and processes that I use in my own work every day to create unique and expressive three-dimensional tapestries.

You’ll leave the workshop with your own loom, weaving tools and yarn - everything you need to keep weaving at home!

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and experienced weavers.

  • The workshop will begin by looking at the various techniques for creating three-dimensional effects in tapestry. We’ll discuss the challenges of constructing a sculptural object from a flat surface, as well as the unique constraints and potentials of tapestry as a three-dimensional medium. You’ll then be encouraged to either pick one complex technique to explore in depth or several simpler techniques try out on the loom. These can include

    - Using traditional techniques such as soumak and rya knotting to create a raised surface

    - Combining soumak and rya knotting with flatweave to create textural contrasts

    - Weaving through the warp in different ways to create three-dimensional effects

    - Using supplementary wefts and warps to create three-dimensional elements

    - Sewing a tapestry into a three-dimensional form off the loom.

Throughout, we will also pay attention to correct weaving technique. You will learn how to keep the warp evenly spaced, the weft running smoothly through it and the selvedges straight.

Instruction will also be given on how to take your tapestry off the loom at the end of the class, but you are not expected to completely finish your tapestry in the workshop.

There will be plenty of time for one-on-one teaching as well as opportunities for me to answer any weaving questions.

  • The workshop will take place at Lois Gunn Studio & Shop in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

The shop is a short walk up the hill from Woodbridge train station. Parking is available at the station car park.

There are regular trains running from London Liverpool Street, and the journey time to Woodbridge is about an hour and a half.

  • The workshop begins at 10:30 and finishes at 4:30. Access to the workshop room upstairs will begin from 10:15 - please note you will not be able to come upstairs before then.

However, the doors downstairs will open before then, so you are welcome to browse Lois’ studio and shop!

Please make sure you arrive in time for the workshop to begin promptly at 10:30.

We will have a short break for lunch at 1pm. Students are encouraged to bring lunch or to pop out and purchase something from the high street.

Tea & coffee will be provided throughout.

I will be in touch in advance of the class to confirm all details and to check if you have any dietary requirements.
